PREIT is undertaking a total transformation of this 1.4 million sq. ft. mall in Springfield, Virginia. A $250 million renovation started in 2014 has added 3 million sq. ft. of commercial and residential space. In 2014, the first phase of redevelopment included a new tenant mix, with health club, movie theaters and gourmet food court. That has led to 100% occupancy at the mall, including J.C. Penney, Macy’s and Target as anchors. Two new office buildings, each 400,000 sq. ft. are planned for the next phase, wichi is a transit-oriented development on adjacent mall land. That will also include 1400 new multifamily units. Residents and workers will be able to walk to the Franconia-Springfield METRO station.
